Undermount or drop-in?

Sinks are either drop-in or undermount. A cut-out is made in the stone for the sink, and it has to be precisely templated and cut to fit. Drop-in sinks sit in a rough cut, while undermount sinks need the edge of the opening cut and polished, because the thickness of the stone shows. Undermount is the clean, modern choice with stone countertops: nothing sits on top of the counter, so crumbs wipe straight into the sink.

A minimum of 3" of stone is needed between the sink and the edge of the countertop for strength.

What this means for youPick your sink before your countertop is templated. If you buy it from us, we have the exact sink on hand for the cut-out.

Sink FAQ

How are sinks installed?
Sinks are either drop-in or under mount. A cutout needs to be made in the granite to accommodate the sink. The sink hole must be precisely templated and cut out to ensure a perfect fit. Drop in sinks are installed in the rough cut, whereas, under mount must be cut and polished as the depth of the granite is exposed. A minimum of 3” of granite is required between the sink and edge of countertop for structural integrity.
Where are granite countertops seamed?
Seams are avoided as much as possible but because granite is mined from a quarry in blocks usually no more than 10′ long, they are often necessary. The visibility of seams depends on the granularity, color and pattern in the granite. Where possible, Custom Granite prefers to place seams at the center of cooktops or sinks. This creates a 3” seam rather than a full depth seam.
Do you have sinks on sale?
Yes. We carry quality stainless steel sinks from Blanco and other brands, and a large variety is on sale. Stock changes as they sell, so call 905-643-6300 or send the form on this page for current sizes and prices.
How are granite countertops priced?
Countertop prices are based on granite type, choice of face profile, sink & cook top variables and quantity of linear footage to be profiled.
